La Zona

While the freshwater dorado has long been admired in Argentina, until recently it was almost completely unknown to the rest of the world. Only within the last several years have dorado become recognized as one of the world's most exciting and prized game fish. A unique species that defies easy categorization, the dorado is rather like a supernatural hybrid between a turbo-charged bass and a trout on steroids, with powerful jaws and rows of razor-sharp teeth to feed its voracious appetite. Combine these characteristics with its propensity for acrobatic leaps, savage takes, and brilliant gold-plated scales, and it's easy to see why Larry Dahlberg dubbed the dorado, "the world's toughest freshwater game fish."

La Zona provides anglers with the opportunity to catch what are without a doubt the largest golden dorado on the planet. Since its inception, La Zona has broken just about every conceivable IGFA record for dorado, holding over ten certified world records and logging over 200 fish over 40 pounds in the last three seasons!

La Zona is located just below the Salto Grande dam on the Uruguay River in northeast Argentina near the Uruguayan border. Prior to 2004 all fishing in the area was forbidden by the Argentine and Uruguayan governments. Luckily the intrepid individuals at La Zona have worked out an arrangement with the governments to conduct fishing studies and excursions four days out of the week, and have thus opened the door to the ultimate in trophy dorado fishing on earth. No one else has access to this coveted area.

Fishing Program

Because dorado fishing on the fly is a comparatively recent development, very little has been written on the subject. Luckily the guides at La Zona are experts at taking these over-sized dorado on both fly and conventional gear. Fishing is conduced exclusively from boats, and anglers cast a variety of streamers with wire shock tippets on both floating and sinking lines. Summer (Jan-April) is the best time to catch these fish on floating lines, while sinking lines are more effective the remainder of the year.
