Almost five weeks passed after the beginning of the season and besides the volcano eruption fishing conditions are great, lakes and rivers remain with high and clear water. It seems that rainbows are already returned from the spawning and getting stronger and silver again. On the other hand, migratory brown are fat, silver and already entering into Limay river . We have been going to the Limay quite often, most of the days have been windy making fishing a bit difficult but that has not been an excuse for not catching fish.

We haven´t been in the Rio Manso system yet ( Manso River, Fonk, hess and Mascardi Lakes), but we have heard it´s giving great rewards, as usual by this time of the season.

If you are interested to fish the Limay river with us, we use Bariloche city as a base, the airport is being remodeled that is why flights from BA are only available to Neuquen or Esquel city, both around 300 to 400 km away, the rest of the trip has to be by ground (airlines include ground transfer to Bariloche which takes around 3 to 4 hours). Volcanic fishing!!

Fishing season started the first of November and we decided to go for one of the most interesting sport fish in Patagonia, Landlocked Atlantic Salmon.

The Volcanic eruption affected the area where we fish for them, there´s about 1 inch of very thin ash all over the ground, anyhow, we managed to get to the river and Fish without mayor issues. The water color was almost normal and the level extremely high, making casting very difficult. After some minutes of getting into the water we were already hooking fish and it happened consistently through all the afternoon. Rainbow trouts were all over the place, most of them still spawning, it seems that everything is bit delayed this year. Luckily we caught what we went for, we had a quiet good number of Landlocked Atlantics in the end of the line, they were really fresh, it seems they just got in from the Lake.

Effects of the volcanic ash that has fallen on our lakes and rivers?

On a scale of 0 to 14 pH, a value of 0 is the most acidic and 14 the most basic.

The rain usually has a pH between 5 and 6.5. It is acidic because it has dissolved carbon dioxide and air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. If the rain water flows over soil containing minerals, the pH usually increases. Bicarbonate ions, HCO-322-HCO

As a result, streams and lakes are usually basic, with pH values between 7 and 8, sometimes as high as 8.5.
The measurement of pH of a body of water is very important as an indication of water quality due to the sensitivity of aquatic organisms to the pH of their environment. Small changes in pH can endanger many types of plants and animals, such as trout and various nymphs can only survive in waters with pH values between 7 and 9. If the pH of the water in which they live is outside this range may not survive or reproduce.

pH Effect

3.0 – 3.5 Fish are unlikely to survive over a few hours in this range, though you can find some plants and invertebrates to pH levels as low as these.

3.5 – 4.0 Is known to be lethal to salmonids.

4.0 – 4.5 Absent all fish, frogs and many insects.

4.5 – 5.0 Many insects away. Most fish eggs will not hatch.

5.0 – 5.5 Bacteria that lives on the bottom of water bodies (decomposers) begin to die. Leaf litter and debris begin to accumulate, trapping nutrients and interrupting chemical cycles. The plankton starts to disappear. Snails and clams absent. Carpets of fungi begin to replace the bacteria in the substrate.
Metals (aluminum, lead) normally trapped in sediments are released into water acidified forms toxic to aquatic life.

6.0 – 6.5 Freshwater shrimp absent. Unlikely to be directly harmful to fish unless the level of free carbon dioxide is high (in excess of 100 mg / L)

6.5 – 8.2 Optimal for most organisms.

8.2 – 9.0 Unlikely to be harmful to fish, but indirect effects occur at this level due to chemical changes in the water.
9.0 – 10.5 Likely to be harmful to salmonids and perch if present for long periods.

10.5 – 11.0 To rapidly lethal for salmonids. Prolonged exposure is lethal to carp and perch.

11.0 – 11.5 Rapidly lethal to all species of fish.

This occurs under normal conditions, it is important to know how this particular type of ash that has fallen affects on our lakes, streams and how is altering the pH of the environment.

What kind of composition has the fallen ash?
What you can find in INVAP and CONEA preliminary work http://organismos.chubut.gov.ar/a mbiente/files/2011/06/Informe-Cenizas-Puyehue1.-INVAP.pdf who express the composition of falling sand is mostly silica, stone bone Pomes, with low concentrations of substances harmful to health and the agencies that come into contact with it.
With data from pH of 5.2, whereupon the pH of the water level could drop from 7 or 8 to 6, where as the mass amount of water relative to the amount of ash fall is considerably less and that there would be a important solution, so the pH could fall below 6 (which is almost impossible).

Conclusion
I don’t think the ash due their composition will affect the life of the trout, it is likely to affect the benthic organisms (insects) and part of the spawning, is likely to affect or diminish the effectiveness of this. We won’t be able to see the effects the next season, we would be able see the consequences in a couple of years or maybe there won’t be any negative consequences. We all hope fishing in the area keeps on giving us rewards like every year.

Red Alert in Northern Patagonia – Puyehue Volcano eruption -.

Saturday 4th of June afternoon a pyroclastic cloud arrived to Bariloche city, turning the day into night, the cloud was over 10 Km high covering the hole area with ash, volcanic sand and even small pumice rocks. The event was caused by the eruption of the Puyehue Volcano, located in Chile, just 100 Km away from Bariloche City.

Flights are totally canceled until wednesday, we are waiting for another cloud in the afternoon, hope it doesn´t last for long.

Villa la Angostura, Piedra del Aguila, Traful, Jacobacci, Pilcaniyeu, Rawson are other affected locatios.

Limay river – Fishing machines in action!

Yesterday we got back from fishing Limay medio with our friend Tommy, it is a pleasure to fish along such a good fisherman! It was fun fishing together. We had great fishing for good size rainbows and browns. Rainbows were really active, we had several double hookups during the trip. We also caught some incredible brownies, most on sinking lines and very slim flies. The weather was just spectacular (to sunny for me, haha) and fishing was great! What else can you ask for!?

We have been fishing from the Limay river mouth (Nahuel Huapi lake) to Piedra del Aguila (Limay medio) and saw fish of all sizes. There is a fear quantity of big fish in the upper part of Limay river, schools of fish are coming into the river from Nahuel Huapi lake. They are pretty difficult to catch, but with a good effort we can get a life time brown trout. Sinking lines and mid size flies are working well at the moment. For more info contact us…

Amazonian Tarpon!

My boss on the Ponoi in Russia, Matt Breuer, shared these pics from his recent trip to the Amazonian rain forest in Guyana in search of the elusive Arapaima gigas (say that 3 times fast). Truth be told, I didn’t even know it was possible to catch these on a fly. He has positively proven otherwise. Now I’ve got yet another destination to add to my growing list of places to fish….Well done Matt!

The Pebble Pedalers

I recently received an email from Parker & Seth Berling of Pebble Pedalers, a couple of die-hard fishermen/cyclists who have been biking for the last year and a half from AK to TDF in order to raise awareness against the Bristol Bay Pebble Mine.

From their website: “In July of 2009, the Pebble Pedalers, a two-man team of conservation-minded cyclists began a 17,000-mile journey to raise awareness of and garner support for protecting the Bristol Bay Watershed from the largest proposed open pit mine in North America. Riding through 15 countries—from Prudhoe Bay, the northernmost point accessible by road in Alaska, to Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of Argentina—we work towards preservation, protection and the restoration of watersheds throughout the Americas in partnership with Trout Unlimited. Please join our fight by educating yourselves on this critical issue and taking action with both pen and pocketbook.”

It’s quite an honor know that these two are using our book in their quest, and to play a small part (albeit vicariously) in their worthy cause. They’ve run into a lot of the same people and fished they same places we did, and all without the benefit of a car! That deserves some serious props. Keep up the good work guys.

Just another day in Paradise.

Fishing has been great these last days!! We have been visiting our favorite spots looking for Migratory brown, rainbows and Landlocked Atlantics. Luckily, beggining of season in northern Patagonia has always given us good times.

We have visited our favorite spot for Landlocked Atlantics, and some nice rainbow and browns also took part on this trip. Limay river has showed some massive fish we want to share with you, most of them by the end of the day, in the magic hour as we call it here.
