Last week I had my good friend and incredible photographer, Isaias Miciu, visit me from Argentina. I wanted to show him the best of what the Pacific NW has to offer, even though December certainly isn’t the best time of year to pursue outdoor activities in this neck of the woods. Luckily Mother Nature was kind to us with the weather, and we were able to combine steelhead fishing, surfing and skiing in a single trip. Isa really captured the essence of the NW outdoor lifestyle. Steelhead road trip

Shortly after returning from Russia, I made a trip out to the Grande Ronde for several days of steelhead fishing. While there were plenty of fish in the river, waiting in line with 10 other dudes before sunrise for a chance to make a single pass through a run wasn’t exactly my idea of a relaxing time on the river, so I enjoyed the social aspect of camp life more than the actual fishing. All in all, it was a great time.

Here’s a picture of Rodrigo Amadeo battling an Atlantic Steelhead on the Santa Cruz river. FYI: two dams are now in the beginning stages of construction, so this incredibly unique river & run of fish will likely be short-lived. It’s an economic boom for the locals who truly need it, however, so I can’t sit on my high horse preaching about preserving fish like a sanctimonious environmentalist. Still, it’s quite sad. Gotta love progress.

BC road trip

On a whim, I purchased an old RV in AK (affectionately dubbed the Eagle 6), loaded her on the ferry to Prince Rupert, and spent the last 3 weeks in BC fishing the legendary rivers I have always dreamed of. I was finally able to step foot into hallowed waters such as the Kispiox, Skeena, Copper, Bulkley and Morice, which are instantly recognizable names among steelheaders the world-over. Fishing was absolutely incredible, though the catching was rather slow. But more important than the fishing, the people I met and befriended along the way made the trip more memorable than any fish ever could. Can’t wait to do it again next year!

BC steelhead

I’ve finally arrived at the steelhead promise land, the Mecca, Vahalla & Shangri-La for steelheaders the world over. I’ve been dreaming of fishing the Skeena & its tribs ever since I started steelhead fishing some 10 years ago. Now that I’m finally here, I’ve been seriously humbled after 3 skunks in a row on the river. It just reminds me that steelhead fishing is never easy, even here. At least somebody is getting monster fish, which gives me renewed faith to keep my fly in the water. After the snow melts and we can drive again, hopefully my luck will change. Southeast Silver & Steel

My season here in Alaska finally wrapped up last week. It was a great summer, and in my opinion there’s nothing quite like chasing steelhead or coho within the beautiful rainforests of Southeast AK. Can’t wait until next year!

Steelhead montage – Canon D10

Before coming up to Alaska this summer, I picked up Canon’s new point and shoot waterproof & shockproof camera, the Powershot D10. It’s 12.1 mega pixels, takes fairly decent shots, and I especially like it for the rainy weather common to Southeast AK. It’s also a lot of fun to play around with the underwater video capabilities. I could go more indepth with the technical specs and what not, if I did that I’d be telling you more than I know. In sum, it’s just a badass camera that’s perfect for fishing, and I’d recommend it to anyone. Here’s a couple short clips from some steelhead releases:
