Volcanic fishing!!

Fishing season started the first of November and we decided to go for one of the most interesting sport fish in Patagonia, Landlocked Atlantic Salmon.

The Volcanic eruption affected the area where we fish for them, there´s about 1 inch of very thin ash all over the ground, anyhow, we managed to get to the river and Fish without mayor issues. The water color was almost normal and the level extremely high, making casting very difficult. After some minutes of getting into the water we were already hooking fish and it happened consistently through all the afternoon. Rainbow trouts were all over the place, most of them still spawning, it seems that everything is bit delayed this year. Luckily we caught what we went for, we had a quiet good number of Landlocked Atlantics in the end of the line, they were really fresh, it seems they just got in from the Lake.

Ponoi Photography Part 3: Autumn

After nearly four months of guiding on the Ponoi, I’m finally back stateside. It is certainly nice to be able to read signs not written in Cyrillic characters and eat food free of dill and cucumbers, but it’s a bittersweet feeling. Looking down onto Ryabaga Camp as the helicopter lifted off for the last time, I already felt a palpable sense of nostalgia setting in. After living and working side by side, day in and day out, with the incredible Ryabaga team, it feels like leaving a close-knit family at the end of the season. Thanks to everyone for making it such an enjoyable season!

And while the autumn brings the fishing season to a close, it is also one of the most enjoyable and special times of year on the river. No bugs, brilliant fall colors, and fat, aggressive fish. Isaiah has done yet again done a fantastic job capturing the essence of autumn on the Ponoi. Check out his pics:

For better or worse, the best fishing in the world is usually found in the far-flung corners of the globe, and often takes considerable effort to get there, let alone endure the various discomforts that come with a true wilderness environment. Lucky for us, Ryabaga camp on the Ponoi has worked hard to provide us with all the luxuries of home right in the middle of nowhere. But it wouldn’t feel like real wilderness if we didn’t have to endure a few insects every once in a while. This is an extreme example, but check out the video of this swarm that I took a few weeks ago:

From Russia with Love….again

Greetings from the Kola Peninsula! I have returned to the Ponoi River in Russia for another summer of guiding Atlantic salmon. A month has already passed since I stepped foot in Russia, so I figured it about time to send a brief update and share a few photos of the journey, the fishing, and life here in camp. Things are always easier the second time around, and I can gladly say that medical exams for the work visa, while every bit as invasive as last time (especially the “pipe cleaning”), didn’t produce the same level of anxiety or psychological damage as before. I at least knew what to expect, though I certainly wasn’t looking forward to it! It is nice to already know the river and my way around here, although my Russian is unfortunately still the same as before, which is to say almost nonexistent.

Atlantic salmon have a reputation for being exceedingly hard to catch (hence the nickname “fish of a thousand casts”), but the allure of the Ponoi is that it’s not uncommon to catch ten in a single day when the fishing is good. This certainly makes life easier if you’re a guide. Compare that with Scotland, for example, where a few fish per week is considered excellent.

True to form above the Arctic Circle, the weather has been incredibly erratic. We have to be prepared for all four seasons every day we go out. We recently had scorching temperatures in the low 90s all day, only to awake to snow flurries the next morning. The unstable weather is at least keeping the bugs at bay for a little longer than usual, although at times they are so thick you can’t breathe or talk without ingesting some unintended protein (see photo). ????????? ????, and stay tuned for more updates!

Just another day in Paradise.

Fishing has been great these last days!! We have been visiting our favorite spots looking for Migratory brown, rainbows and Landlocked Atlantics. Luckily, beggining of season in northern Patagonia has always given us good times.

We have visited our favorite spot for Landlocked Atlantics, and some nice rainbow and browns also took part on this trip. Limay river has showed some massive fish we want to share with you, most of them by the end of the day, in the magic hour as we call it here.
